Course Summary
This online course for sports officials is aimed at empowering you to bring the ‘ease’ back into officiating.
With ReferEASE, you'll work through situations of confidence, concern and conflict and, for each, share some tips and tools for interacting effectively with coaches, parents, and players. The online course balances theory with real-life experiences and tips from sports officials and experts.
It includes:
- Easy tips for creating a positive first impression,
- Specific words to avoid when giving instructions… and the key phrases you can use to get things to go your way,
- A closer look at “the brain on sports” and why people lose their cool,
- A constructive approach for deflecting verbal abuse and threats,
- Some strategies for taking a stand against racism on the ice, floor, or field,
- Plus, proven tools that drive a positive environment of confidence for all!
This online course was originally for Sport Manitoba in Canada and the different sport organizations it serves. It is now available for all sports officials! Thanks to their support and to our sponsors', we're able to offer free access to any official who wants to improve their communication skills, one situation at a time.

Nathalie Kleinschmit is an award-winning trainer and consultant specialized in international relations, customer service and meaningful change. Her career has taken her from C-suites in Europe and public utilities across the Arab Gulf, to music groups and sports fields in North America. Whether working with refugees or referees, bankers or bus drivers, her focus is always about fostering positive environments that allow people to face challenges with confidence and reach their full potential at work and at home.
Her MBA in innovation and change fuelled her love for design and systems thinking - or more simply - looking for opportunities and creative ways of thriving in times of uncertainty and incessant change. Thanks to online courses and train-the-trainer programs, Nathalie's training approaches are more accessible than ever, enriched by the stories and solutions shared by the more than 20 000 people who've taken part in her Global'Ease, MyArtist.Life, and ReferEase workshops.
